Week 2 : ARPANET

This weeks reading was a bit of a history lesson I suppose. I think mainly for me it was a wake up call, a push back into university and using my brain, as bad as that sounds. The reading basically explains the first purpose of what we now know as the internet, which was ARPANET. A Node was created and implemented at UCLA so scholars could share their information quickly and collectivly on what later became known as ARPANET.
I suppose ARPANET becoming a sort of online post office, doesn't surprise me, it's human nature to interact and evolve, so really ARPANET being used for personal use doesn't surprise me and I for one would have sort of expected that to happen. I guess I say that because knowing myself, eventually work would be boring so to speak and eventually social instinct takes over, ask how the other person is, how their day has been or along those lines. And within a short time any network can be turned into a social hub.
The reading for me just emphasizes how easy a page like facebook can take over when the internet has become such a huge part of peoples lives now.

It is interesting how it started as a luxury for few people but quickly became an absolute necessity and expected in every place.

I agree with social instinct taking over. Sometimes I wish it wouldn't; like when I am doing homework. I wonder if there is a way to prevent that instinct from taking over? So many people have the problem of social instincts distracting them.

Agreed. It's always hard to say no to a distraction, and facebook is so very tempting.
